Barnaby the field mouse felt ashamed.
He was incredibly jealous of Edgar the Squirrel, who had enormous piles of acorns.
Barnaby, aware that his role as deputy to Sheriff Hound meant upholding the authority, tried to dismiss these feelings.
One day, he overheard a deliberate plot involving a poisonous berry designed to sicken all who attended the annual pie-eating contest.
He knew it was his duty to demonstrate the truth to Sheriff Hound even though some might not like to listen to him due to his lack of numerous resources or physical attributes.
He also discovered this scheme was plotted because another competitor believed that he would make sure tremendous effort was expended to keep him from getting his pie.
Uncovering this terrible scheme made Barnaby no longer need to amuse himself with the idea of gathering Edgar's riches, he was so happy that he exposed the conspiracy.
Thanks to Barnaby, everyone deemed the whole idea marvelous that such an enormous conspiracy to release the poison to the contest.
Later, everyone at the field were also aware that this plot was devised to invite the attention of a demon.
